About Me

My Photo
I have been interested in British railways for as long as I can remember. Though I am a fan of the Western I do take an interest in the other regions. I never thought I would say this but I also have an interest in early diesels including the first generation DMU's !! My modelling has taken many twist and turns over the years, from the early Triang 00 of my youth to brief excursions into the world of 009,N,and 3mm scales. I then returned to 00 but in finescale and eventually to EM where I feel at home. I have now been modelling in EM gauge for almost 30 years and am a member of the EMGS. I am often asked why don't I model in P4, well to be honest there was not much trade support for P4 all those years ago when I started to take an interest in finescale modelling and I don't see the point in starting all over again at my age. I do however take my hat off to those modellers who continue to raise standards through their P4 modelling. Penhydd will be my last project and will be improved, extended in the same way as Peter Denny and Jas Millam have done with their layouts Buckingham GC and Yaxbury.

Welsh Interlude Pt. 3

One of the joy's of retirement is being able to go anywhere at anytime and so last week we once again travelled to Mid-Wales to get away from it all.  On our last visit to this lovely area we called at Welshpool in the hope of catching a glimpse of steam on The Welshpool & Llanfair Railway at Raven Square station.  Unfortunately the place was crowded and so we decided to visit Llanfair instead, see............

On our return visit to Welshpool we planned our arrival just before the first train of the day was due and were lucky that not many people were around, so photography was unhindered.
I particularly wanted to explore the station building which is of Midland Railway parentage and once stood at Eardisley on the Hereford and Brecon Railway.  There is a plaque on the main entrance wall which states that the building was only a temporary affair because of the Crimea War, being erected at Eardisley in 1903 !

Anyway time for some photos.....

Station Approach

The following photo sequence shows the arrival of a train from Llanfair and it's departure.

After taking water and a quick brew up The Earl ran around it's train ready for departure.

As you can see it's a rather steep climb for departing trains.

The train had arrived over twenty minutes late and there was talk of technical problems ?

With a whistle and in a cloud of steam The Earl departed

I was really surprised just how easily The Earl lifted it's train out of the station and up the bank !

The End
